P0496 EVAP Purge Flow Too High
Get it checked soon
Fuel vapor is being pulled into the engine when the computer has not asked for it. A purge valve stuck open is the usual cause. It can make the engine hard to start or rough right after you refuel, so get it fixed soon.
- Safe to drive?
- Yes, fix soon
- Typical cost at a shop
- $61-$643 RepairPal national averages, parts and labor
- Emissions test
- Yes, while the check engine light is on, most OBD emissions tests fail the car.

What it means
Fuel vapor from the tank is stored in a charcoal canister, and the purge valve lets the engine burn it at the right moments. P0496 means the computer saw vapor flow, or vacuum in the tank, while the purge valve was supposed to be closed.
The technical version
During the EVAP test, the computer closes the purge valve and watches the tank pressure sensor. If vacuum builds in the tank anyway, the valve is leaking through. Some carmakers set P0496 when the tank vacuum drops past a limit too fast. A purge valve stuck open is by far the most common cause.
Official name: Evaporative Emission System High Purge Flow.
Symptoms
- Hard start or rough idle right after refueling.
- Rough idle at times.
- Sometimes a fuel smell or a stall.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How likely | How to tell |
|---|---|---|
| A purge valve stuck open | most common | It does not hold vacuum when unpowered. |
| A purge valve wired so it stays powered | rare | A wiring fault or a connector problem. |
| A faulty tank pressure sensor | rare | Its reading is off with the cap open. |

What the live data shows
With the engine idling and EVAP purge commanded at 0%, fuel trims should be steady. If they move rich when the tank is full, or if the tank pressure sensor shows vacuum building with purge off, the valve is leaking through.
What to check first, in order
-
Do not top off the tank after the pump clicks off.
Liquid fuel in the vapor lines makes the problem worse.
What the data shows: No reading needed.
Cost: free
-
Watch purge percentage, fuel trims and tank pressure at idle.
A valve leaking through shows up here.
What the data shows: Steady trims and no tank vacuum with purge at 0%.
Cost: no cost if you have a scanner
-
Test the purge valve: it should hold vacuum when unpowered.
It is the usual cause.
What the data shows: Not a scanner step.
Cost: $61-$90 at a shop (Emission system diagnosis (shop), RepairPal)
-
Replace the purge valve.
The usual fix.
What the data shows: Starts after refueling are normal again.
Cost: $210-$251 at a shop (EVAP purge valve replacement, RepairPal)
Is it safe to drive?
Get it checked soon
Yes, fix soon. Extra vapor can make the engine stumble or stall, especially after refueling.
Usually drivable, but a stuck-open purge valve can cause a rough idle, a hard start or even a stall right after a fill-up, when the canister is full of vapor. Do not top off the tank: extra fuel in the vapor lines makes it worse.
Stop driving and get help if
- The engine stalls in traffic.
- You smell strong fuel inside the car.

National averages for the full job at a shop, parts and labor, from RepairPal (updated September 3, 2026). Your price depends on the car and the area. Many of the first checks on this page cost nothing with a scanner. The EVAP purge valve was CarMD's number 6 check engine repair in 2025, at an average of $172. CarMD averages come from a different method (repairs reported by its users), so they can sit below RepairPal's shop estimates.

Can I clear it? Will it come back?
The EVAP test only runs under certain conditions, often a cold start after the car has sat for hours, with the tank between about a quarter and three quarters full. After the repair, clear the code and drive normally for several days. The EVAP monitor should show complete and the code should stay away.
Will it fail an emissions test?
Yes, while the check engine light is on, most OBD emissions tests fail the car.

Questions people ask
Is P0496 the purge valve?
Almost always. A purge valve stuck open lets vapor in when it should not.
Why does my car not start after getting gas?
With P0496, a stuck-open purge valve can flood the engine with fuel vapor right after a fill-up.
Can I drive with P0496?
Usually, but get it fixed soon, and do not top off the tank.
