P0401 EGR Flow Insufficient
Get it checked soon
The EGR system is not sending enough exhaust back into the engine. Carbon in the passages is the usual cause. You can drive it, but fix it within weeks.
- Safe to drive?
- Yes, fix within weeks
- Typical cost at a shop
- $158-$632 RepairPal national averages, parts and labor
- Emissions test
- Yes, while the check engine light is on, most OBD emissions tests fail the car.
What it means
The EGR system sends a measured amount of exhaust back into the intake. This cools combustion and cuts NOx emissions. P0401 means the computer asked for EGR flow and did not see the response it expected. Carbon buildup in the valve or passages is the usual cause.
The technical version
The EGR monitor opens the valve under set conditions and looks for a change in a sensor: intake manifold pressure, a DPFE pressure sensor on many older Fords, or a valve position sensor. Too small a change sets P0401. Too much flow is a different code (P0402).
Official name: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected.
Symptoms
- Often only the light.
- Pinging or knocking under load on some engines.
- Sometimes a rough idle if the valve sticks partly open.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How likely | How to tell |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon clogging the EGR passages or ports | most common | The valve moves but the flow change is small. |
| An EGR valve that sticks or does not open fully | common | Commanded and actual EGR disagree, where the car reports both. |
| A failed EGR sensor (DPFE or valve position) | common | The sensor reading does not move when EGR is commanded. |
| Cracked vacuum lines to a vacuum-operated valve | less common | Brittle hoses on older engines. |

What the live data shows
Where the car reports them, commanded EGR and EGR error show it directly: EGR is commanded and little happens. Timing advance under load can also help: if the engine hears knock, the computer pulls timing back.
What to check first, in order
-
Read codes and freeze frame.
Shows the conditions when EGR was tested.
What the data shows: Commanded EGR and EGR error, where supported.
Cost: no cost if you have a scanner
-
Check vacuum lines and the EGR sensor connector.
Cheap causes first.
What the data shows: No reading needed.
Cost: free
-
Test or replace the EGR sensor (DPFE on many older Fords).
A cheap part that fails often.
What the data shows: The sensor reading should move when EGR opens.
Cost: $158-$182 at a shop (EGR pressure feedback (DPFE) sensor replacement, RepairPal)
-
Clean the EGR valve and passages.
Carbon is the usual cause.
What the data shows: After cleaning, EGR error should shrink.
Cost: free to a few hours of labor
-
Replace the EGR valve if it still sticks.
Last step.
What the data shows: Commanded and actual EGR agree.
Cost: $489-$632 at a shop (EGR valve replacement, RepairPal)
Is it safe to drive?
Get it checked soon
Yes, fix within weeks. The engine runs, but hotter than designed.
You can drive on it, but do not leave it. Without EGR, combustion runs hotter, and on many engines that can cause pinging under load, which can shorten an engine's life. It also fails emissions tests. Plan the fix in weeks, not months.
Stop driving and get help if
- You hear loud pinging or knocking under load.
- The check engine light flashes.

National averages for the full job at a shop, parts and labor, from RepairPal (updated September 3, 2026). Your price depends on the car and the area. Many of the first checks on this page cost nothing with a scanner.
Can I clear it? Will it come back?
After the repair, clear the code and drive normally, including some steady cruising. The EGR monitor should show complete and the code should not return.
Will it fail an emissions test?
Yes, while the check engine light is on, most OBD emissions tests fail the car.

How Obie handles P0401
Obie reads commanded and actual EGR where your car reports them, and timing advance under load, to tell a stuck valve from a sensor fault. Obie is part of ScanMyCar Pro. Codes and live sensors are free.
Questions people ask
Can I clean the EGR valve to fix P0401?
Often yes. Carbon is the most common cause. If the valve still sticks after cleaning, replace it.
Is P0401 serious?
Not urgent, but it can cause knock under load and it fails emissions tests. Fix it within weeks.
What is the difference between P0401 and P0402?
P0401 is too little EGR flow. P0402 is too much.

A guide, not a diagnosis. This page describes what P0401 generally means across OBD2 cars. What is actually wrong with your car depends on its live data and its history, and any repair decision deserves a proper diagnosis, whether that is you with a scanner or a professional with a lift.
