P0101 Mass Airflow Sensor Reading Out of Range
Get it checked soon
The mass airflow (MAF) sensor's reading does not match what the computer expects from engine speed and throttle. A dirty sensor or an air leak after it is the usual cause. Drivable, but fueling suffers, so fix it soon.
- Safe to drive?
- Yes, fix soon
- Typical cost at a shop
- $77-$381 RepairPal national averages, parts and labor
- Emissions test
- Yes, while the check engine light is on, most OBD emissions tests fail the car.

What it means
The MAF sensor measures the air going into the engine, and the computer uses that number to decide how much fuel to add. P0101 means the reading is plausible as a signal, but it does not fit: too much or too little air for the engine speed, throttle and pressure the computer sees.
The technical version
The computer compares the MAF signal with an airflow it predicts from rpm, throttle position and manifold pressure (on cars with a MAP sensor). If the two disagree past a limit, P0101 sets. P0102 and P0103 are the circuit low and high codes; P0101 is the range or performance code, so the wiring is often fine and the sensor or the air path is the problem.
Official name: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem.
Symptoms
- Hesitation or stumble when you accelerate.
- Rough or unsteady idle.
- Worse fuel economy.
- Sometimes lean or rich codes with it.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How likely | How to tell |
|---|---|---|
| A dirty MAF sensor element | most common | Oil or dust on the element; readings improve after cleaning. |
| An air leak between the MAF and the throttle | common | A cracked intake boot or loose clamp; lean trims at idle. |
| A clogged air filter or a blocked intake | less common | The filter is dark and packed. |
| A failing MAF sensor | less common | Cleaning does not help and readings stay off. |
| A vacuum leak or a stuck PCV valve | less common | Hissing, and P0171 or P0174 with it. |

What the live data shows
Read MAF grams per second at warm idle and compare it with a known-good value for your exact engine; bigger engines read more. Then raise rpm smoothly: the reading should rise smoothly without dropouts. Watch fuel trims at the same time: big positive trims with a low MAF reading point to unmetered air or a dirty sensor.
What to check first, in order
-
Inspect the intake boot and clamps between the MAF and the throttle.
A crack lets in air the sensor never sees.
What the data shows: No reading needed.
Cost: free to look
-
Check the air filter.
A blocked filter changes airflow.
What the data shows: No reading needed.
Cost: $77-$97 at a shop (Air filter replacement, RepairPal)
-
Clean the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner only.
Contamination is the most common cause.
What the data shows: MAF readings and trims should look normal afterwards.
Cost: a can of MAF cleaner
-
Compare MAF readings with fuel trims at idle and 2,500 rpm.
It shows whether the reading is low, high or noisy.
What the data shows: Trims near 0% and a smooth MAF curve are healthy.
Cost: no cost if you have a scanner
-
Replace the MAF sensor if it still reads wrong.
The element can fail.
What the data shows: Readings match the spec afterwards.
Cost: $274-$381 at a shop (Mass airflow (MAF) sensor replacement, RepairPal)
Is it safe to drive?
Get it checked soon
Yes, fix soon. The computer meters fuel from this sensor, so the mixture can be off.
Usually drivable. Expect hesitation, rough idle or weak power on some cars, and worse fuel economy. Lean or rich running from a bad MAF signal can, over time, cause misfires and harm the catalytic converter.
Stop driving and get help if
- The engine stalls or hesitates badly in traffic.
- The check engine light flashes.

National averages for the full job at a shop, parts and labor, from RepairPal (updated June 18 and September 3, 2026). Your price depends on the car and the area. Many of the first checks on this page cost nothing with a scanner. MAF sensor replacement was CarMD's number 4 check engine repair in 2025, at an average of $346. CarMD averages come from a different method (repairs reported by its users), so they can sit below RepairPal's shop estimates.

Can I clear it? Will it come back?
After the repair, clear the code and drive a mix of idle, city and highway. If the code stays away after several drives, the fix worked.
Will it fail an emissions test?
Yes, while the check engine light is on, most OBD emissions tests fail the car.

How Obie handles P0101
Obie reads MAF airflow and fuel trims together and tells you whether the pattern looks like a dirty sensor, an air leak or a failed MAF. Obie is part of ScanMyCar Pro. Codes and live sensors are free.
Questions people ask
Can I clean the MAF sensor to fix P0101?
Often, yes. Use only MAF cleaner, do not touch the element, and let it dry fully before you refit it.
Can I drive with P0101?
Usually, for a short time. Get it fixed soon: bad fueling wastes fuel and can harm the converter.
What is the difference between P0101 and P0102?
P0102 is a low signal, often wiring or a dead sensor. P0101 means the signal works but does not fit what the engine is doing.
