P0087 Fuel Pressure Too Low
Caution
The engine is not getting the fuel pressure it asked for. A weak fuel pump, a clogged filter or, on direct-injection engines, the high-pressure pump are the usual causes. The engine can stumble or stall, so treat it with care.
- Safe to drive?
- Not far, it can stall
- Typical cost at a shop
- $125-$1,513 RepairPal national averages, parts and labor
- Emissions test
- Yes, while the check engine light is on, most OBD emissions tests fail the car.

What it means
The fuel system keeps fuel at a set pressure in the fuel rail that feeds the injectors. P0087 means the measured rail pressure stayed below what the computer wanted. On direct-injection gasoline engines and diesels there are two pumps, a low-pressure pump in the tank and a high-pressure pump on the engine, and either can cause it.
The technical version
The computer commands a target rail pressure and reads the actual value from the fuel rail pressure sensor. P0087 sets when the actual pressure stays below the target by more than a set margin. Running very low on fuel, a weak in-tank pump, a clogged filter, a leaking regulator, a worn high-pressure pump or its control valve, and a faulty pressure sensor can all cause it.
Official name: Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low.
Symptoms
- Hesitation or stumbling under load.
- Long cranking or hard starting.
- Stalling.
- Reduced-power mode.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How likely | How to tell |
|---|---|---|
| A weak in-tank fuel pump or its wiring | common | Low pressure at all loads; the pump hums loudly or not at all. |
| A clogged fuel filter | common | Pressure drops more at high load; an old filter on a car that has one. |
| A worn high-pressure pump or its control valve (direct injection and diesel) | common | Low-side pressure is fine, high-side pressure is low. |
| A faulty fuel rail pressure sensor | less common | The reading does not match a mechanical gauge. |
| Running very low on fuel | less common | It set with the tank near empty. |

What the live data shows
Many cars show desired and actual fuel rail pressure. Actual should track desired at idle and under load. A gap that grows under load points to fuel supply; a reading that is wrong with the engine off, or that does not match a mechanical gauge, points to the sensor. On direct-injection engines, a shop also checks the low-pressure side.
What to check first, in order
-
Put fuel in the tank if it is low.
Very low fuel can starve the pump.
What the data shows: No reading needed.
Cost: free
-
Compare desired and actual rail pressure at idle and under load.
It shows how big the shortfall is and when.
What the data shows: Actual should follow desired.
Cost: no cost if you have a scanner
-
Replace the fuel filter if your car has a serviceable one.
A clogged filter starves the pump.
What the data shows: Pressure holds under load afterwards.
Cost: $258-$322 at a shop (Fuel filter replacement, RepairPal)
-
Have fuel pressure tested with a gauge, low side and high side.
It tells a pump from a sensor.
What the data shows: Not a scanner step.
Cost: $125-$183 at a shop (Check engine light diagnosis (shop), RepairPal)
-
Replace the part the test points to.
Pump, regulator or sensor.
What the data shows: Pressure follows the target again.
Cost: $1,344-$1,513 at a shop (Fuel pump replacement, RepairPal)
Is it safe to drive?
Caution
Not far, it can stall. Low fuel pressure can cause stalling or sudden loss of power.
Treat this one with care. Low fuel pressure can make the engine lean, hesitant or stall, sometimes without warning, and many cars go into reduced-power mode. Avoid highways and heavy traffic until it is fixed. A fuel smell or leak is a fire risk: stop and do not drive.
Stop driving and get help if
- The engine stalls, stumbles hard or loses power in traffic.
- You smell fuel or see a fuel leak.

National averages for the full job at a shop, parts and labor, from RepairPal (updated June 18 and September 3, 2026). Your price depends on the car and the area. Many of the first checks on this page cost nothing with a scanner. RepairPal's fuel pump estimate is for the pump in the tank. On direct-injection engines the high-pressure pump on the engine is a separate part with no RepairPal estimate, and its price varies a lot by car.
Can I clear it? Will it come back?
After the repair, clear the code and drive with some firm acceleration. If the pressure follows the target and the code stays away, the fix worked.
Will it fail an emissions test?
Yes, while the check engine light is on, most OBD emissions tests fail the car.

How Obie handles P0087
Obie compares desired and actual fuel rail pressure at idle and under load and tells you whether the pattern points to supply, the high-pressure pump or the sensor. Obie is part of ScanMyCar Pro. Codes and live sensors are free.
Questions people ask
Is P0087 the fuel pump?
Often, but check the fuel level, the filter and the pressure sensor too. On direct-injection engines it can be the high-pressure pump.
Can I drive with P0087?
Not far. The engine can stall or lose power without warning.
Can a clogged fuel filter cause P0087?
Yes, on cars with a serviceable filter.

A guide, not a diagnosis. This page describes what P0087 generally means across OBD2 cars. What is actually wrong with your car depends on its live data and its history, and any repair decision deserves a proper diagnosis, whether that is you with a scanner or a professional with a lift.
